Intelligent Mobility
The i-Motors project aim was to establish a universal set of guidelines for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-anything (V2X) communications using a combination of cloud-based computing, terrestrial and satellite communications. By adding predictive and contextual intelligence to connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), also pave the way for safer, greener and cleaner road use in the future.
i-Motors was jointly funded by government and industry via the government’s £100m Intelligent Mobility fund. This funding is administered by the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) and delivered by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency.
The Concept
Using an integrated V2X (vehicle-to-anything) communications system, the i-Motors project aim was to facilitate:
Vehicle health monitoring
Advanced warning of hazards for drivers
Road condition alerts for drivers and local councils alike
The use of real-time traffic data in route mapping
The location of vehicles to sub-metre accuracy
The use of human-machine interfaces in future CAVs.
This data, collected and processed in real-time, will be used for the dynamic mapping of traffic, weather, road conditions and hazards in order to increase safety, limit congestion and provide a wealth of information for drivers, councils and manufacturers alike.
The Process
Project started in May 2016, and completed at the end of April 2018, the i-Motors project sought the support of potential end-users and stakeholders of the service, before developing the necessary hardware and software systems and embarking upon the route to market. Huduma provide the project with a commercial focus and sustainable business model for the service.
Taking a holistic approach, i-Motors also address issues of security, privacy and user trust of the technology, using state-of-the-art human factors research provided by the University of Nottingham to ensure user acceptance of the service.
The Delivery
The i-Motors service will:
Improve driver awareness of hazards and increase safety.
Improve the provision of safety, security and privacy information into the industry.
Provide dynamic mapping to assist driver experience, facilitate urban planning, and reduce traffic.
